What is myala?

myala is a self-tracker for the mind that fosters human connection. myala empowers you with your own data so you gain more self-awareness, as well as connecting you with people you trust.

What does myala do for me?

myala helps you track, review and compare factors that relate to your mental health and wellbeing, such as your mood, calmness, focus and sleep.

myala also connects you to support.

If you are in crisis, myala gives you instant access to free, 24/7 crisis support via Crisis Text Line. Text HAP to 741741, or tap the Crisis Text Line button in the Your support section of app.

If you’re feeling down and just want someone to talk to, you can send out a myala signal to friends or family.

You can also access tips and resources on mental health and wellbeing from our partner Active Minds.

What is a Check-in?

A Check-in is a daily survey where you answer questions to help you reflect on how you are feeling in the moment. Each Check-in will take about 30 seconds to complete in the morning and evening.

myala asks you questions on 7 factors that relate to your mental health and wellbeing:

  • Mood – How up or down you feel.
  • Calmness – How calm or anxious you feel.
  • Focus – How clear-headed and focused you feel.
  • Motivation – How you feel about your ability to take initiative, how enthusiastic and satisfied you feel.
  • Sleep – How you feel about your sleep quality.
  • Socialization – How you see yourself around others and your social interactions.
  • Physical – How you feel your psychological state may be impacting your body and vice versa.

How can I view my data?

You can access your reports on the “Your Data” page. Tap on the geometric myala symbol on the bottom nav of the app.

myala’s reports enable you to track your mental health and wellbeing over time. myala gives you access to different types of data related to your emotional and physical well-being, and how they interact. myala uses two types of data to generate your report:

  1. Check-in report – this is based on information that you enter in your daily Check-in.
  2. Sleep report – if you choose to connect your wearable device (see below how), myala can integrate sleep data as measured by your wearable into your report.

Your Check-in Report

Your Check-in report shows changes over time in the factors that you reflected upon in your daily Check-ins. myala helps you track your moods and emotions as you are experiencing them, and then view trends over time.

myala breaks down your Check-in report by 7 factors that relate to your mental health and wellbeing:

  • Mood – How up or down you feel.
  • Calmness – How calm or anxious you feel.
  • Focus – How clear-headed and focused you feel.
  • Motivation – How you feel about your ability to take initiative, how enthusiastic and satisfied you feel.
  • Sleep – How you feel about your sleep quality.
  • Socialization – How you see yourself around others and your social interactions.
  • Physical – How you feel your psychological state may be impacting your body and vice versa.

You can understand your data in more depth by comparing two or more factors. For example, you can compare how your mood is changing versus your sleep. Tap a factor to toggle it on and off in the chart.

You can view your data by day, week, month or year.

Swipe left or right to see earlier or later dates.

A break in the line shows that you didn’t answer questions for this factor during that period.

Your Sleep Report

Your Sleep report is based on sleep data collected by your wearable device if you choose to connect it to myala. This Sleep report is in addition to the sleep line in your Check-in report which is based on the questions you answered about how you experience your sleep.

myala currently supports Apple Watch, Fitbit and Oura ring. To connect your wearable, tap the gear icon on the bottom right of the app to go to Your Settings/Wearable devices. Please give permission to share the data with myala on your wearable’s account.

Tap the myala icon on the bottom left of the app to get to Your Data, then scroll down to the Sleep report.

The Sleep report shows you your total sleep time last night, when you fell asleep, when you woke up, and any interruptions during the night.

Tap on Day, Week, Month or Year above the chart to see trends over time.

Sleep tips:

  • Most people need around 7-9 hours of sleep.
  • To get a good night’s sleep, aim to go to bed at a consistent bedtime.
  • Turn off your mobile device, unless you want to listen to some sleep meditation.

This is a lot of data about me, how do you handle privacy?

We take your privacy very seriously. Please view our Privacy Policy for more details on what data we collect, how we use it and how we may share it: https://myala.app/privacy

How can I get support when I’m not doing well?

If you’re in a crisis, myala can connect you to a crisis counselor. Go to the “Your Support” section of the app by tapping on the round circle on the bottom of the app, or text HAP to 741741. A trained crisis counselor from Crisis Text Line will text you back.

Crisis Text Line provides free, 24/7 support for any kind of crisis. Learn more about Crisis Text Line at https://www.crisistextline.org/

If you’re not in a crisis but are feeling down and just want someone to talk to, you can send out a myala signal. Here is how it works:

  1. In the Your Support section of the myala app, invite your friends or family to be part of your support team. After they accept, they appear in your support team list. You can add or remove supporters at any time.
  2. You can customize the text message that myala sends out to your friends asking for support. (This is optional).
  3. When you want support, all you need to do is to tap the myala signal button in the app. myala sends a text message to each person on your support team asking them to get in touch with you.

The “Your Support” section of the app also contains other tips and resources that you might find helpful. These resources were compiled by Active Minds, the leading nonprofit organization supporting mental health awareness and education for young adults.

How can I customize the time for my Check-in notifications?

During the sign in process, myala will ask for permission to send you notifications. Please agree to this so we can send you reminders when it’s time to do a Check-in. Otherwise you’ll miss your Check-ins!

You can customize the reminder time for morning and evening in Your Settings/Check-in reminders. Tap the gear icon on the bottom right of the app to get to Your Settings.

How do I connect my wearable?

If you have an Apple Watch, Fitbit or Oura ring, you can connect it to myala. Tap the gear icon on the bottom right of the app to go to Your Settings/Wearable devices. Please give permission to share the data with myala on your wearable’s account.

How can I give you feedback on myala?

We are grateful for any feedback you might have to help us make myala better. We are constantly evolving the app based on user feedback. Please use the feedback button in the top right corner of the myala app; it looks like a comic text bubble. You can attach a screenshot in the form. You can also email us on feedback [at] flourishlabs.net, but the form makes it easier for our developers to see your feedback.
